How their work relates to education systems

In "What Can Education Systems Research Learn from Health Systems Research?," Hanson compares existing education systems research with her expertise in the now robust field of health systems research. Ultimately, Hanson argues that education systems research should develop as a "question driven field." This means that the field of education systems research should address different questions through the use of various different system models.[2]

She also suggests that education systems research should draw on various other social science fields to better understand the nature of systems; that "evaluations of education systems should recognise their complexity and be strongly theory-of-change led; and finally, that researchers should reflect on what structures and organisations might be needed to 'build the field' in order to secure adequate funding and demonstrate impact."[2]

Brief biography

Kara Hanson is a Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). She is a leading researcher on health systems, focusing on the ways in which the organisation and financing of health care systems – including pricing issues and engagement with the private sector – affect health outcomes and equity.[3]

Her research primarily focuses on the economics of health systems in low- and middle-income countries, as well as the economics of malaria control interventions.[1]

She received her PhD from the Harvard School of Public Health, and joined LSHTM in 1997.

Hanson is also a member of the RISE Intellectual Leadership Team.
